If your favorite movie is Love, Actually I can not relate to your perception of reality.

Me, last night. (via likeapairofbottlerockets)
Alright, so I usually pretty much hate romantic comedies. It’s a genre with the potential for a lot of intelligence and awesomeness, yet is also something that’s easy to make shiny and pretty and commercial and therefore most romantic comedies coming out of Hollywood suck. Real life love stories are all complex and unique, but Hollywood romcoms are just canvases for people to project themselves onto and are formulaic garbage. I hate them.
But, back to the point of the genre having potential to actually be really good and interesting, I feel like Love, Actually is one of the best examples of that I can think of. That is a well done romantic comedy. Not my “favorite movie” but definitely a really interesting, unique, and refreshing movie about love. And I really appreciate that, because love is really interesting and weird and complicated and hard to figure out so it’s nice to see a movie in the mainstream that explores the subject in an honest and actually pretty creative way.
My top 3 favorite examples of well done romantic comedies are Love, Actually, Annie Hall, and Shakespeare in Love. While LA is probably the least good of those three, I stand by my assertion that it is damned good and a really refreshing reminder that funny movies about love can be well-made and creative, even if they do have mass commercial appeal.
